Asean Foreign Ministers’ Statement On the Revitalization of the Trilateral Mechanism

1. We welcome efforts to revitalize the Trilateral Mechanism of China, Japan, and the
   Republic of Korea to further promote peace, security, stability, and prosperity in East Asia.
2. We reaffirm the important meaning of the ASEAN Plus Three cooperation framework with
   ASEAN as the driving force, and other ASEAN-led mechanisms to promote a culture of
   dialogue and cooperation, enhance mutual trust and confidence, and respect for
   international law in the region, as well as to promote, mainstream and tangibly implement
   the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific. The revitalization of the Trilateral Mechanism
   would further support the ASEAN Plus Three framework and strengthen the ASEANcentred regional architecture.
3. We look forward to further high-level engagements among China, Japan, and the Republic
   of Korea, including the convening of the Trilateral Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and Summit.
   ASEAN stands ready to play a constructive role to facilitate such engagements in
   conjunction with ASEAN meetings where all three parties are also involved.
4. In these regards, we appreciate the role and efforts of the Republic of Korea as the
   coordinator to move forward with the Mechanism, including through its efforts at the
   margins of recent ASEAN meetings in Jakarta.
