Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said the potential for the digital economy in the Asean region could reach US$ 2 trillion by 2030. According to him, of that amount, Indonesia will get a 40% share or US$ 800 billion.
“With the digital economy framework agreement, it will be US$ 2 trillion in ASEAN and 40% of it will be in Indonesia, so US$ 800 billion will be in Indonesia,” said Airlangga at the launch of the White Paper, National Strategy for the Development of Indonesia’s Digital Economy 2030, at the St Regis, Jakarta, Wednesday (6/12/2023).
Airlangga said that the economic potential in digital Asean could be achieved because only this region already had a digital economic framework. This cooperation framework was ratified when Indonesia hosted Asean in 2023.
According to Airlangga, without this framework the digital economy in ASEAN would only reach US$ 1 trillion. The digital economy framework agreement, he said, is capable of multiplying the potential that exists in Asean.
Airlangga said the potential for developing the digital economy was certainly a good opportunity for Indonesia. To achieve this, he said, Indonesia will make a number of preparations. One of them is increasing Indonesia’s digital competitiveness, which is currently ranked 51st to 20th. He said the contribution of the digital economy to Gross Domestic Product also needs to be increased to the level of 20%.
“So, if by 2030 our industrial contribution can be 20% digital, then Indonesia will be able to leave the groundwork. We can take off our economy to become a country with an income of close to US$ 10,000 between US$ 8 thousand to US$ 9 thousand in 2030 ,” he said
Airlangga said the launch of this white paper was also part of Indonesia’s efforts to maximize the potential of the digital economy. According to him, Indonesia’s efforts will be divided into 3 phases, namely preparation, transformation phase and leading phase.
“In the preparation phase, digital foundation preparation is mainly related to interoperability, then also standardization and there are 9 other ecosystems including infrastructure. The transformation phase is the acceleration of transformation, and leading is us leading future innovation,” he said.
